July 2003:
Lucy memorial block for LABMED's quilt IV

Spring 2003: LABMED chose "A Dog for All Reasons" as their quilt theme.

Since my previous log cabin blocks had come out pretty well and were fun to do, that route was an easy decision. After much consideration of animal-print and food-print fabrics, I decided to honor Lucy using a different approach. She was a goofy, homey dog, and I grew up in the 70s, so 70s fabrics seemed about right.

Last year I donated a lot of contemporary white-on-blue fabric for this year's quilt. It features a Lab going through what looks like a marsh. Sue Erickson of LABMED opted to use it as this year's backing material. With a bit of this backing fabric as my central square, I selected as many red-and-white and multicolored 70s fabrics as seemed to be in my stash and laid them out. I added one more contemporary fabric, the one with the squiggly stripes, because it reminded me of water and Lucy loved to swim. After a few days of rearranging and relayering and asking other folks' opinions of different combos and color ranges, I chose the fabrics shown. The happy, homey, outdoorsy red and white fabrics on the top and left move from tiny to larger prints. The brighter fabrics on the bottom and right have water, fruit, and flower patterns of about the same scale but slightly different color combos. The block is bordered with the center fabric to make sure it would blend with any other blocks people sent in.
