July 2002:
Birthday sleeping bag for Julia

Early July 2002: Clifford sleeping bag for Frank & Gina's daughter Julia's 2nd bday. Was told that Julia loved everything Clifford and was having a Clifford-themed party.

Bought the fabrics at JoAnn's and Hancock Fabrics in June/early July; sewed the bag mostly in one night. Sewed one major seam wrong and had to rip out a whole bunch of the bottom and redo it, or it would have taken half as long as it did.

Took a long piece of fabric (about 3 yards) and doubled that over for the outside. Used a different fabric for the inside, one for the bottom and one for the cover. Double batting for the "bottom"; single batting for the "top". Made sure to tack the batting down along all seams. Open down most of one side for ease of entry. Made a matching pillow w/ pillowcase. All Clifford fabrics. In a brain-drain moment, I made the pillow out of the flannel and its case (with back flap rather than open end, but a bit tight) out of the flat fabric. This made it very hard to get the pillow in and out of the case. Had considered other fabric combos (bordered insides), but decided to keep it simple because I was tired and couldn't picture how to do the seams.

In future sleeping bags, I'll have to remember to use the flat fabric for the pillow and the flannel for the case. Gina also suggested that I quilt and/or tack through the middles of the large open sections of the bag so that the batting wouldn't be able to shift.

Julia and brother Benjamin (a little older than Miranda) both loved it and climbed in and out of it throughout her birthday party. I ended up not using the handles after all; Gina later said that she was going to make a tote bag for it. Benjamin wanted a similar sleeping bag for the holidays, but unfortunately I didn't have to make him one. Miranda wanted a similar one too; haven't made her one either.

In the last picture, note the red and white pillow. It's the latch-hook one I'd made Benjamin. He brought it out from his room when they started camping on the floor at the party.
