Summer 2002:
Friendship Star quilt for local firemen
Summer 2002: A red-white-and-blue quilt that was supposed to be for Charlotte for her first Fourth of July, but it never quite looked the way I wanted. This grew out of this year's LABMED blocks. The white-on-white fabric reminded me of fireworks; the red was supposed to be summer days; the blue with stars, for summer nights. The four blue and four red friendship stars weren't enough in and of themselves for an entire quilt, so they had to be supplemented. We must have laid out several dozen possibilities; most looked too much like the Texas flag and/or were blinding. It sat there for months. The Fourth of July passed. The summer was over. I tried adding big yellow triangles to set the existing bits on the diagonal and make them a usable size, but it still needed a border. At last, an idea worth completing... Miranda had a thing for bringing treats to our local firemen, so - with her support - I finished this project as a small wall quilt. I wanted yellow, but the big yellow triangles didn't work now. Earlier, Shawn had suggested narrow yellow strips around the edge to suggest the gold fringe on our flag. I went with this, using a yellow print for the backing and wrapping it around as a binding. Quilted around each stars and along the striped border. Miranda and I gave the quilt to what we call "Floris Fire Station". It's adjacent to Floris Elementary but its real name is Frying Pan, Station 36. We took it over for the September 11th anniversary, along with some of her yummy decorated cupcakes and a general note of appreciation. When we returned for their October 2002 open house, we discovered that they'd had the quilt framed and had hung it just outside the door of their dorm room. It's so much more appropriate for them than for us, and makes Miranda feel good. Recognize the yellow fabric? It's the same one I used in that first Around the World quilt for Miranda. I really like it for some reason - a happy yellow, and it goes with almost everything.
