Late 2001/early 2002:
Flannel-ish nightgown for Miranda
Late 2001/early 2002: A flannel-ish nightgown for Miranda. She'd bugged me for a nightgown from the time of the first quilt. Hey, it's all sewing, right? I found some great, bright-colored flannel of girls playing dress-up. It sat for a long time while I hemmed and hawed over how to cut it. Finally, I turned her favorite nightgowns inside out, and cut slightly larger body pieces from the dress-up fabric. Sewed them together pretty quickly. She wanted LACE everywhere. Took me a while to figure out how to add sleeves (they barely fit once I did the seams) and how to finish the neck (moire ribbon binding with white eyelet cotton (poly/cotton?) lace trim). I used way too many stitches per inch on the ribbon binding - "fine" - and it'll never come out, even if I want it to. I added the same lace at the wrists, but didn't gather them enough for the ruffle effect I'd wanted. Barely enough fabric was left over to make a matching toddler-sized (travel) pillowcase. She loved it, but I hadn't left enough play around the chest. The nightgown split partway down the back after a few rambunctious wearings and ended up back on my mending pile for a few months. Simple answer (and good solution to date): a gusset in back. Her head now fits through fine AND her back doesn't get a draft. She likes to wear it backward so she can do the hook-and-eye herself. 12/03 update: I've had to repair the gusset a few times. Either she outgrew the nightgown very quickly or else I just hadn't done the seams right. I sewed them down very solidly, and the fabric next to the sewing is what ripped...
