December 2001 through December 2002:
MIDIMaze happy-face aprons for Linda & Greg Matching black aprons printed with multicolored happy faces, for our MIDIMaze friends Greg & Linda. At a craft show earlier in 2001, I'd bought a dog-print apron from a local craftsperson and she custom-made a smaller, similar one for Miranda. After getting some quilting under my belt, I figured I could make aprons myself. Started them the afternoon of their 2001 holiday party, figuring - see a pattern? - "how hard could it be?" Thought I could whip a pair up in a couple of hours. Expected to have enough time left over to do a small one for their son, who's a bit older than Miranda. Entertained fantasies of making several such aprons and selling them on eBay or at craft shows. Yay ego. Here's the fun part... Began with a slight variation on aprons we had: traced around them (roughly) onto heavy brown paper that had come from the center of some rolls of wrapping paper. Cut out the patterns; used them to cut the main apron pieces. Neatened up some scraps for pockets, but never ended up using those. Cut some even-sized strips for apron ties. Hemmed most of the edges of the apron bodies and broke the sewing machine needle. Replaced the needle. Tried to continue sewing. No go - tension was all messed up somehow. The thread just would not catch. Tried for an hour or two; finally gave up in despair and went to the party (late!) with an alternate, generic gift. Took the machine in to be cleaned and repaired several months later, after I'd gotten over most of the disgust and disinterest. Sewed nothing in the interim that I can think of. Once the machine came back - soon after Charlotte was born, I seem to remember - I finished the strips so they could be sewn on as apron ties. I didn't finish the aprons completely until getting the invite for Greg & Linda's December 2002 holiday party. Added happy-face buttons where the neck strap attached to the front, which was what they needed. Never did make a little apron for their son. Miranda is asking for a smiley-face apron for herself, but I doubt I'll get around to it anytime soon, if ever.
